At the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium (ASG) in Leonberg, 630 pupils are currently taught by 59 teachers. Almost all classrooms are equipped with internet access and modern digital media. In addition to a good information infrastructure, the room climate is also of fundamental importance for an optimal learning atmosphere.

Saving energy through mechanical ventilation

The new school ventilation units FVS-1000 Eco2Schoolwhich were integrated into the two science classrooms during the extensive refurbishment, provide a better learning environment and at the same time help to save energy. They make window ventilation superfluous and ensure continuous air exchange. “School ventilation units make it possible to reduce CO2-concentration in the room,” says Gordon Keppeler from Climair Gebäudetechnik GmbH (Waldenbuch), who carried out the installation of the ventilation systems. A co2-concentration of well below 1000 ppm (parts per million) is easy to maintain, which has been shown to benefit learners’ ability to concentrate.

FVS 1000 better venting, better ventilation

The new FVS-1000 façade ventilation units Eco2School convey significantly more air than is usual for classrooms. While up to 600 m³/h is usually sufficient for normal-sized classes, the 1000 units can supply up to 990 m³ of conditioned fresh air per hour into the room and discharge the same amount as exhaust air. One of the purposes of the higher air flow rate is to ensure better ventilation in the event that unpleasant or irritating gases and vapors are produced during the experiments. Furthermore, the higher air flow rate ensures constant “dilution” of the breathing air and thus significantly reduces the risk of infection from (corona) viruses adhering to aerosols.

This high air flow rate ensures compliance with workplace regulations and VDI 6040 incl. of the required minimum outside air change can be guaranteed. The new devices are also relatively flat at just under 48 cm and can be easily integrated into large ceiling cases.

Integrated heat recovery reduces heating costs

In order to lose as little heat as possible during ventilation in winter, the devices have a cross-counterflow heat exchanger that makes over 80 % of the thermal energy contained in the extract air available for the supply air flow. As a result, the heating energy requirement is lower than with window ventilation and only little energy is required to reheat fresh air in winter.

As the supply and exhaust air flows are separated in the heat recovery system, dust particles, fungi, germs and viruses are reliably removed with the exhaust air. An air short circuit on the façade side is prevented by the large distance between the inlet and outlet behind the weather protection grille and the air routing. “Thanks to this and the appliance’s internal air filter, the indoor air quality is much higher than it would be with the windows open,” says Keppeler. In addition, mechanical ventilation counteracts excessive humidity – and thus mold growth. The FVS-1000 also keeps street and schoolyard noise to a minimum. Eco2School outside the classrooms.

Quieter and more hygienic ventilation than via the windows

Another advantage of the ventilation technology is that the façade ventilation unit concealed in the ceiling box is particularly quiet – despite the powerful radial fans, it is practically imperceptible during lessons.

To ensure that the ventilation technology does not cancel out on the electricity side what is saved on the heating side, they have EC fans with a high degree of efficiency. The speed of the fans can also be adjusted. A presence detector can be used for this purpose or, even better, a CO2-sensor. This allows operators to specify the desired indoor air quality and the air flow rate is automatically adjusted. During the corona pandemic, it is recommended that the CO2-threshold value in order to better remove aerosols – and thus also any viruses. In addition, the devices should be operated in normal mode for some time before and after the lesson to further reduce the possible virus concentration.
